Lolas Beichstuhl DVD- 11 min.

This is second art film by Surrealist artist Warlock Michel Teuber is shot in sepia and ‘documents’ the dark, surrealistic- sometimes psychotic and neurotic- journey of Lolas down a path to possible sexual liberation.

The film opens with an empty chair, which represents the Confessional, and then a shot of a naked Lolas dressed in high heels masturbating. From there, Lolas is seen flagellating herself, caressing the chair lovingly, toppling it with a kick, and then alternating clips of Lolas and the Chair. There are a few psychotic moments as Lolas rocks herself in the chair, parading around the chair, scratching herself in a momentary fit of self-mutilation, etc.

Each scene symbolizes different aspects of Lolas’ struggle to sexually liberate herself and seemingly failing to find the freedom she desperately seeks. At one point, she even dons a gas mask, which is a prominent device in Warlock Teuber’s sculptures to symbolize the breathing freely in a world where the moral standards of a weak and delusional society can be stifling.

I thought it was an interesting way for Warlock Teuber to address the issue of seeking sexual liberation, especially since sex still appears to be a taboo subject even in the 21st century. The film is only 11 minutes long but a dark, surrealistic, and interesting journey. If you are a fan of Teuber’s work, or enjoy art films, this may be one DVD you’d want to own.
